Arizona has some of the world’s most stunning and unusual scenery, from giant saguaros and red rocks to adobe missions and modern skyscrapers. The landscape varies depending on the part of the state, but no matter where you live, there are hundreds of unique places available when you’re choosing a great spot for your engagement photos.

An engagement session is important to photographers because they can spend some quality time with a couple to see their comfort level in front of the camera and learn what their best angles are. Does the bride have a great profile or does she think her nose is too large? Is the groom incredibly photogenic, or sensitive about his thinning hair? Knowing what a couple’s perceived flaws are will help the photographer take better pictures at the wedding. In turn, an engagement session allows couples to experience firsthand how their photographer works (easy-going, fun, likes to direct), so they’ll be more relaxed—and look more natural—for the wedding photos.

The next thing to consider is location. You can have the photos taken in a studio with a traditional background or choose a place that has meaning to you, such as the café where you hang out, the train station where you met or a spot you think is cool, like a 1950s-style diner or funky downtown space. What best suits your personality and style? Where do you feel comfortable? Are you natural-born hams who love the camera? Considering these questions can help you choose the best location for you.
