Today many bridal couples are forgoing tradition for tradition’s sake, instead embracing their own personal style. “I ask how we can incorporate little hints of their personalities,” says Cicely Rocha-Miller, senior consultant and owner of Life Design Event Planning, “and how the story of their lives can be intertwined into their party.” By including their style and personalities and weaving their shared history into the table décor, each couple creates a unique and memorable experience for themselves and their guests.

Arizona bride Adelita Rivera decided she wanted to bring her family’s celebration of the Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead—a traditional Mexican holiday) into her wedding. Inspired by a photo of herself and her fiancé in front of a bright orange floral arrangement and a Dia de Los Muertos portrait painted by her father, they decided to use the photo as a save-the-date card.  “I loved the flowers in that photo and wanted to be able to pull those same colors into the wedding,” Rivera says. Rocha-Miller, Rivera’s wedding planner, created her bold look by using splashes of color; for instance, White Poppy, Rivera’s floral designer, designed the centerpieces using roses, orchids and gerbera daisies in various shades of yellow, red and orange. Rocha-Miller added burnt-orange bengaline chair linens to the white garden folding chairs, and placed matching runners across the white tablecloths. She also added silver candelabras and vases, colorful Chinese lanterns, votive candles and Dia de Los Muertos cookies for the couple’s younger guests, creating a festive mood also reminiscent of an old Spanish-style wedding.
