New Outdoor Venue at Boulders Resort
Ideas & Inspiration
Nestled in the foothills of the Sonoran Desert in Scottsdale is Promise Rock at the Boulders Resort, a popular golf resort and spa getaway. It’s been in such demand during peak wedding season, the owners decided to add a new outdoor site.'
“Many brides want to be married at the Boulders, and we do numerous weddings, but brides in heels and grassy golf courses don’t mix,” says Debi Bridges, spokesperson for the Boulders Resort and Golden Door Spa. “So our general manager took his team out to look for places, discovered a beautiful ravine, and the new site was born.”
The entrance of Promise Rock is marked with a welcoming gate constructed of natural latillas (“little sticks” or peeled branches) and adorned with blossoming rosebush vines brimming with color. A walkway serves as the aisle, preventing the aforementioned heels-in-grass debacle for the bride. The 12 million-year-old boulders provide a rock-solid foundation for the beginning of a life together, while a stunning waterfall symbolizes the abundance of love marriage evokes. The boulders that surround the ravine feature commissioned rock art of a couple holding hands, reminiscent of an ancient petroglyph, affirming the honor of marriage since the earliest human society.
Even flora and fauna seem to celebrate the joy of nuptials as prickly pear cacti bloom in rich colors, newborn rabbits scamper across the grassy knoll and families of quail scurry among the saguaro cactus.
“The wildlife is really stunning. We’re in the high desert, so we get a bit more. You’re pretty much guaranteed to see bunnies and quail at any time—even during ceremonies,” says Bridges.
The lush, manicured meadow offers a unique “desert bouquet” and can accommodate up to 250 people for a wedding ceremony. The site rises 2,288 feet above sea level, providing extraordinary sunset views and panoramic vistas of the valley below, perfect for an evening ceremony. Guests get a true bird’s-eye view of the glorious desert, including a peek of the emerald-green fairways of The Boulders’ pristine golf course. Promise Rock was designed specifically as a ceremony site, but the resort offers a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces where couples can hold their reception, for an all-inclusive event.
A recent discovery only adds to the mystique. “The Arizona State University archaeological department just confirmed real petroglyphs, and that the site was a fertility altar,” says Bridges. “It really is a union of past and present.”
