Honeymoon Hot Spots
Arizona’s travel experts name their top honeymoon picks for 2010 and beyond.

FIJI
A natural beauty in the tropical waters of the South Pacific, Fiji fits the quintessential tropical honeymoon bill. “For those wanting a more exotic honeymoon, Fiji is a great value for the money,” says Sharon Oberritter of Oberritter’s Travel in Scottsdale. Fiji offers sand and sun, beaches and rainforests, and best of all, romance and seclusion, all infused with the rich Fijian culture. Coined the “soft-coral capital of the world,” scuba adventure seekers can find some of the best diving on earth.

Liku Liku, which means “calm waters,” is a five-star property in the Mamanuca archipelago of Fiji. This resort delivers subtle luxuries, blending the richness of Fijian ancient culture with modern high-end lifestyle amenities.

The Koro Sun Resort and Rainforest Spa offers a top-notch all-inclusive experience. This resort quickly dispels the myth you can’t have quality with quantity; so have your gourmet cake and eat it, too—lots of it.

TAHITI
Shannon G. Rice of Riso Studio in Scottsdale says Tahiti sweetens the South Pacific’s island offerings. Tahiti’s natural beauty is framed by its soft mountainous backdrop and its clean sandy beaches. The fertile valleys allow local farmers to cultivate acre upon fragrant acre of vanilla, with an unexpected bonus: Where else can you and your mate enjoy an open-air dose of naturally calming aromatherapy?

Rice suggests honeymooners try Tahiti’s Le Taha’a Resort and Spa. Located on Motu Tautau on the coral reef, Le Taha’a faces the island of Taha’a on the lagoon side and Bora Bora island on the ocean side, offering a 360-degree view of authentic Tahitian life.

Another choice pick is the Bora Bora Lagoon Resort & Spa where French and Polynesian cultures merge to create a rare synergy of exotic multicultural flavor and design.

HAWAII
Lynn Ziegenhagel of Your Travel Center in Phoenix recommends Hawaii, for all the reasons you can imagine. Whether it’s the picturesque sunsets, calming tropical breezes or simply the convenience of traveling to a tropical paradise that’s within U.S. borders, the islands of Hawaii remain a favorite honeymoon hot spot.

Susan Hunter of Honeymoons and More in Tucson agrees, saying “Hawaii is a perennial favorite for honeymooners from the West. I like the Kea Lani and the Grand Wailea in Maui. Turtle Bay on Oahu and the Westin Princeville in Kauai are getting consistent raves as well.”

The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort, Oahu is Ziegenhagel’s pick for couples who want elegance and luxury. This resort offers spacious guestrooms, each with its own private lanai patio and spectacular island views.

CARIBBEAN
Hunter also recommends the northern Caribbean, particularly the private island of Turks and Caicos. “The island personifies a perfect newlywed haven filled with natural beauty in a tranquil setting, offering endless opportunities for secluded romance,” she says.

Parrot Cay Resort features the region’s best spa and haute cuisine. Boasting a mile-long powder-soft beach, couples can find their own stretch of sand, relax around the resort’s infinity-edge swimming pool or walk the endless trails winding through undisturbed terrain.

Ocean Club Resorts is another great choice where honeymooners can have their feet in the sand and a glass of champagne in hand within minutes of arrival. Don’t miss the signature his-and-hers massage.

SOUTH AFRICA
“I believe the top unknown destinations for honeymoons to be South Africa and the Maldives,” says Eva Guibert, owner of Tailored Travel Services in Peoria.

The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa in Cape Town, South Africa sits alone, nestled at the base of Table Top Mountain. Honeymooners can enjoy the romance of Cape Town, take a safari or shop the local boutiques and wineries for souvenirs.

For serenity and seclusion, the Soneva Gili in the Maldives is the spot. The island nation located southwest of India and Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean is comprised of more than 1,100 islands, with only 250 that are inhabited. Accommodations at the resort are over-water villas near a small coral island in one of the country’s largest lagoons.
