Black and White Wedding Cakes
Keep things simple yet striking with a contemporary black and white cake from a local bakery.

{1} “I often get inspiration from clothes and handbags,” says April Goff, owner of the aptly named Designer Cakes by April, based in Gilbert. For this graphic floral creation, Goff was inspired by the fabric of—you guessed it—a handbag. She mimicked the bag’s bold floral print by applying black fondant cutouts to a smooth white fondant cake. “Big is in: big flowers, big cutouts, big designs,” she says, and her creation taps all three.

{2} Avant-garde is the best way to describe Icing on My Cake’s towering creation. “A cake like this is good for someone who doesn’t want the same-old, same-old cake,” says owner Natalia Bouimer. Perfectly at home in an art gallery, the daringly balanced square tiers feature alternating black and white fondant patterns. Vertical lines add even more height to the dramatic creation, while the three-dimensional flowers bring a touch of softness to the angles.

{3} Three-dimensional flowers take center stage on this leather-and-lace-inspired cake by Lori Mefford of Elegant Cake Creations in Mesa. Already stunning from a distance, this design is ready for its close-up too, thanks to Mefford’s attention to detail: Every flower features a lace design pressed into the fondant. “Black and white is a big trend,” says Mefford, especially because of the color duo’s classic feel. Mefford’s bold design comes with equally bold flavors like pink champagne.

{4} A classic ‘50s-inspired checkerboard pattern goes bridal with black fondant flowers on this four-tiered beauty from La Dolce Pesca. “This cake is definitely made for a modern wedding,” says creator PJ Coleman. The contemporary design is “simple and fun.” Paired with her traditional cake flavors, like chocolate, the raves keep coming—“for a classic, delicious cake, this is the place to go,” she says.

{5} The traditional white wedding cake gets a creative twist in this geometric design from Sugar Buzz Cakes by Carol. Plain round tiers are anything but with diamond-embossed fondant. A stylish topper of calla lilies, looping bows, ribbons and baby’s breath is presented atop a crimped charger. “This cake is made for an elegant evening setting,” says designer Carol Antes, the brains (and talent) behind signature flavors like cherry pistachio and dark chocolate fudge.

{6} Baker Ella Levinson of Classic Cakes and Confections sought to create a simple, classic cake with a modern monochromatic twist. The result? A chic yet slightly whimsical masterpiece. “I love the simplicity of the cake, and the anemone flowers at the top are one of my favorites,” she says. Think a bold black cake will be a great fit at your reception? Don’t forget the lighting! Avoid hiding this beauty in a dim corner—be sure to work with your event staff to spotlight it.
