Arizona Ranch Weddings
The sky’s the limit when hosting a wedding at one of Arizona’s beautiful ranch resorts.

When preparing their dream wedding, most brides don’t worry about when the cows go out to pasture or if a dominant rooster is going to interrupt a first dance with a loud cock-a-doodle-doo. Big-city brides should have no fear, though: Ranch weddings mean stunning natural backdrops with options ranging from a campfire rehearsal dinner to five-star hotel accommodations. No matter what you seek, choosing a wedding on the range will have your guests talking about a true Southwestern experience for years.

Arizona ranch wedding locations
Fortunately for Arizona brides, finding a secluded and luxurious ranch location does not require a plane ticket. Prescott, Tucson, Sedona, Wickenburg and the White Mountains are all a short drive from the hustle and bustle of Arizona’s capital city. Included in every ranch is a setting for those who want the vacation feel of a destination wedding without traveling too far from home.

In Tonto Flats, 25 minutes from downtown Prescott, lies Juniper Well Ranch, the wedding site chosen by Jenny and Jonathan Mason of Phoenix. While venue scouting, the couple took a day off to visit Juniper Well and quickly found themselves off the grid and out of cell-phone range. “We took a turn and went down a five-mile dirt road, lost cell-phone service, no signs, nothing.” Jenny says. “I thought it was going to be a commercialized ranch, but we drive up to the top of a hill and knock on the door and find the owner in yoga pants, answering e-mails. She was in shock that we made it there.”

Though driving to the ranch was an adventure, the soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs. Mason fell in love with the scenery. “She gave us a tour and we just thought it fit us.” Jonathan says. “Showing us the different ranch houses and cabins, it immediately took me back to my memories of ranches as a kid. I could picture my mom and dad staying there.”

Phoenix couple Jenny and Jonathan Mason loved the rustic atmophere at Juniper Well Ranch.

Melissa Castleman, now a Connecticut resident, also felt a childhood connection when she visited her wedding site of Hidden Meadow Ranch in Greer, west of Phoenix. “Every winter we would go up to Greer to chop down our Christmas tree, so it was a very special place to us,” Melissa says. “We had a personal connection to our space, and they made us feel so welcome.”

Comforts of a ranch wedding
Providing guests with a familiar feeling is what a ranch wedding is all about. Activities at Juniper Well include storytelling around the campfire, horseshoe tournaments, nature walks, massages and yoga classes. Guests who are young, or young at heart, can help feed the ranch’s horses and farm animals. For a more grown-up experience, Juniper Well boasts two acres of vineyards where guests can sample various wines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Malbec.

Hidden Meadow Ranch boasts a margarita hay-wagon ride among its many activities, an adventure that Melissa and her guests enjoyed. “They’ve turned their feeding schedules into an experience,” she says. “They invite you on a wagon and throw hay over and the horses follow you. One of the horses even came out and kissed our dog on the nose.”

These unique experiences kept Melissa’s guests talking long after they left the ranch. “Hidden Meadows Ranch is a place that keeps your guests really active. They’ll do things they’ve never done in their lives,” she says. “We have guests from our wedding whose neighbors and friends have gone to the ranch based on how much they raved about it.”

While the allure of new experiences, open air and wine from local vines may be enticing, some guests might need to prepare to give up a few modern comforts. For the Masons, that turned out to be the perfect way for everyone to get to know each other. “My mom is attached to her phone,” Jenny says. “To know that her work e-mail would be off was worth it. People were forced to interact. It was just magical.”

Jonathan agrees: “There wasn’t anything that we felt like we missed out on because we were away,” he said, adding, “Nobody missed the Internet.”

When to host an Arizona ranch wedding
No need to battle the mascara-melting summer sun: choosing a ranch in the high country means a cooler wedding day any time of year. Just minutes from scenic Sedona, you’ll find the Dancing Apache Lodge, whose list of activities includes year-round hiking, creek fishing and swimming.

For a winter wedding in the White Mountains, Hidden Meadow Ranch offers horse-drawn sleigh rides and complimentary shuttles to Sunrise Ski Park. If you’re looking for a break from the outdoors, you can visit The Spa at Rancho de Los Caballeros in Wickenburg and indulge in a Home Sweet Home milk bath. While the bridal party takes in spa services, the groomsmen can enjoy the Rancho de Los Caballeros championship golf course, listed as one of the top 75 resort courses in America. And if you can’t bear to leave a beloved family pet home alone, you’re in luck: Most ranches welcome pets—including horses.

The most enticing allure of a ranch wedding might be the opportunity to make your ceremony and reception as glamorous or as down-home as you want. Most ranch owners don’t blink if you inquire about having enough space to erect a 500-person tent.

Olen Petznick of Dancing Apache Lodge in Page Springs declares that a bride’s freedom of choice is a big reason people choose a ranch setting. “In comparison to golf course weddings or traditional facilities, our venue can range from an intimate country affair to elegant wine-country estate occasions,” he says. “The ceremony options available at the ranch are truly breathtaking, from a vineyard backdrop, a gazebo on the lake, or a rose garden. […] Any bride is sure to find the most beautiful location for the ceremony of her choosing.”

For smaller guest lists, Hidden Meadow Ranch specializes in more intimate settings. “Our services can be best described as a wedding tailored to the wedding party’s needs,” says general manager Jane Lenci. “Each bride receives a personal wedding planner and the ability to be creative. Décor can be most anything the bride requests.”

For most weddings, the accommodations and natural scenery provide all the décor you need, Lenci notes. “The log building speaks for itself,” she says. Melissa agrees that the surroundings give brides the best of many worlds. “You’ll see bear-claw marks in the tree trunks. The cabins are Ralph Lauren meets the Old West. There’s always a fire going and plush leather couches. It’s very rustic, yet very luxurious. I wish every day were like this. I really felt like a princess.”

A ranch off the beaten path offers as many amenities and luxuries as a country club — with an added VIP feeling. With 50 guests at her soirée, Jenny Mason says, “we took over the ranch. We felt like the owners handed us the keys to their place and we had the ranch to ourselves for the weekend.”

Even though most ranches offer packages, they’re customizable, and weddings still feel one-of-a-kind, particularly because it can be all yours. “It didn’t feel like a wedding factory,” Jenny says. “There wasn’t another wedding cleaning up while we were setting up ours.”

Melissa also “took over” the ranch for her fall wedding and she recommends finding a space your entire wedding party can fill comfortably. “Renting out the whole space, along with lots of natural beauty around you, brings people together in a way that’s very special and very rare,” she says.

No matter what spot on the map you choose, one thing is certain: Most Arizona ranches must be seen to be believed. “You have to go there [ahead of time] and fall in love with it,” Jenny says. If the breathtaking views, enviable weather and local flavor don’t rope you in, the chance to bring a touch of the city to the winding trails makes Southwest ranch weddings a perfect fit for many brides. The sky is, quite literally, the limit.
